The Growing Trend of Diabetes | The Diabetes Mellitus Blog
Diabetes is a very common disease. Every year more and more cases of diabetes are diagnosed, and the percentage of the population having diabetes increases. In 1900 less than 1 percent of the U.S. population had diabetes. By the year 2000 it is estimated that a minimum of 7 percent to 8 percent, or one out of every twelve people living in the United States, will suffer from diabetes. The diabetes epidemic is a world wide phenomenon. The common usage of refined sugar is a worldwide phenomenon. Over 1000 million people in all countries have diabetes, and that number will grow to 250 million by 2015.
The occurrence of diabetes increases with age for all groups and also with obesity. The Pima Indians in the southwestern United States have the highest incidence of diabetes in the world. The glycemic indexes of many of the Pima Indians’ traditional foods were low compared to the hybridized, highly refined carbohydrates, and their systems could not efficiently handle the increased sugar load.
A strong word of caution: If you are currently taking insulin or other diabetic medication and want to start reversing diabetes naturally by changing you diet completely, consult your doctor because you will probably not require your current does of medication. It is very likely that you will not need as much insulin and quite possibly, if you are a Type 2 diabetic, none at all if you closely follow this diet plan.
